Who is the leader of the Jaegerists?

***THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4 PART 2, READER'S DISCRETION IS ADVISED***

Well, it's pretty obvious.

Of course the leader of the Jaegerists is Eren Jaeger, but in various occasions he's been missing, for example during the time he was in jail.

Eren in jail talking to Hanji

When Eren couldn't lead his forces, the command was given to the more troublesome veteran of the Survey Corps: Floch Forster.

In many occasions, Floch has led the most iconic actions of the Jaegerists, like the arrest of the veterans at Nicolo's restaurant, the beating of Keith Shadis and Zeke's apparent resurrection.

In order from left to right: Zeke's "resurrection", Floch at the restaurant and Floch with Keith Shadis

This is what we've seen in the anime so far.

But who rules the Jaegerists after Eren and Floch's deaths?

We know that Floch dies at Odiha in chapter 132 "Wings of Freedom", after attempting to destroy the flying boat before getting killed by Mikasa.

Eren dies in chapter 138 "A Long Dream", after getting beheaded by his lover.

We know that the Jaegerists still rule the island, even after the two leaders' deaths, thanks to this panel right here:

But who's the leader? Do we know them? Is it Historia? Or is it someone else?

First of all, I believe Historia isn't the leader of the Jaegerists.

Just like for the rest of the series, Historia's role in the regime is simply a figurehead one - even before the events of season 4, the important decisions of the humanity inside the walls were taken by the military, like Dot Pyxis and most importantly Darius Zachary (hence why the Jaaegerists blew him up).

Historia simply enacted social reforms, to satisfy the basic needs of the main populace, like the orphanages where she met the Farmer.

Even though she is one of the main negotiators for the Peace Conference of Paradis of 857, I don't believe she would have taken any major role other than the one representing the people of Paradis.

Historia in front of Kiyomi Azumabito and the other ambassadors

If it's not Historia the leader of the Jaegerists, then who is it?

We can try and deduce who could they be - first of all, let's list all the known members of the Jaegerists:

Louise, the girl who was saved by Mikasa in 845 in Trost, and became a loyal servant to her. Even though she was one of the original members of the Jaegerists (she was arrested along with Floch for the suspicion of her involvement in the information leak of Eren's captivity), she probably died for her injuries during the second battle of Shiganshina, after stealing Mikasa's scarf.

Louise

Wim and Holger, these two are, along with Louise, the recruits responsible of the leak, they had an extremely minor role in the organization, appearing clearly just in this situation and in none else. Although Holger's status is unknown, we know that Wim is still alive in a crowd in the last chapter of the manga.

Holger                                                       Wim

Two other members of the Jaegerists are Hitch Dreyse and Rico Brzenska, who again appear to be by the side of the Jaegerists amidst the crowd in chapter 139.

Hitch                                                        Rico

Another member who becomes a little more important in the manga is Surma, the recruit who dared to speak up against Keith Shadis (but ended up being saved by the latter) appears in the crowd too.

Surma

This is the manga panel I'm talking about:

Since all these characters appear in the crowd hailing the Army, it's highly unlikely they're the high command of the Jaegerists.

Two older characters from Season 1 re-appear as Jaegerists in the manga: I'm talking about Samuel and Daz, who were both killed by Connie at the Harbor.

Samuel                                                       Daz

The question is still on though: who's the new leader of the Jaegerists?

*Historia can't be because of the reasons I've stated above;
*All the known Jaegerists are either dead or simple members of the party;
*Almost the whole high command was eliminated when turned into a titan by Zeke in Shiganshina;

But I have a theory!

The current leader of the Jaegerists might be... Holger!

Along with being one of the first members of the Jaegerists (he worked with Floch to press Eren's liberation from jail), Holger appeared other times close to Floch, like for example the restaurant scene.

Holger and Floch at the restaurant and during the interrogation

I believe Holger, in the three years after the Battle of Heaven and Earth, climbed the military ranks and eventually became one of the Eight Officers of the Jaegerist regime.

The Eight Officers

What do you think? Who is the leader of the Jaegerists in 857?

The Rumbling, how did we get those numbers?!

***THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4 PART 2, READER'S DISCRETION IS ADVISED***

It's pretty much known that sometimes, numbers in Attack on Titan don't make sense.

And the case of the Rumbling is a peculiar one.

During Armin and Eren's last conversation in the Paths, Eren tells his best friend that 80% of humanity will be crushed under the Colossal Titans

This percentage has always made me scratch my head.

80% of humanity is a lot, especially if we find ourselves on a planet as big as Earth.

Hypothetically speaking, since the Attack on Titan world is simply our planet simply reversed by 180° (read my article "Where is the main story located?" to learn more!), and that the technology (and ideologies) the characters find in Marley can be assigned to the period between the year 1900 and 1920, at that point in history, our planet counted around 2 billion (2.000.000.000) inhabitants.

80% percent of 2 billion (2.000.000.000) is 1,6 billion (1.600.000.000).

How did Eren manage to kill this many people? To just try to answer to this question we have to understand how the Rumbling worked.

I have three hypotheses on how it worked:

1) The Rumbling was a widespread action.

As the map below shows, this first hypothesis basically implies that the Colossal Titans' march is just straightforward, with Eren leading the way until Fort Salta.

This hypothesis could explain the number of deaths, if we suppose that the Marleyan continent and the Middle East were the most populous continents of the planet, but doesn't explain why certain places, like the unnamed east-asian country (probably Hizuru) and other countries more racially different than Marley were destroyed too. (image below)

First Hypothesis

Countries perishing because of the Rumbling

2) The Rumbling was completely directed by Eren.

This hypothesis instead of justifying the number of deaths it justifies the manga panels (image above) and the reason of the Rumbling

Eren, in chapter 132 discusses with Yelena on how to limit the Global Alliance's power before they could attack Paradis, during the last conversation with Armin says "They won't be able to go to battle" (image above), and later, after the Battle of Heaven and Earth, the Jaegerist militarize Paradis Island fearing retaliations for the Rumbling.

Eren wonders if the plan to attack Acirfa (or Karifa) will work

Yelena assures Eren about the plan

The Jaegerist re-militarize Paradis Island

To prevent the immediate retaliation of the Global Alliance against Eldia and Paradis island, Eren was "forced" to destroy the major powers of the Earth - this meant for Eren the destruction of Marley, the betrayal of Hizuru and also the destruction of Acirfa (or Karifa) and Fort Salta, to pulverize the Global Fleet and the Marleyan Air force.

How could he do that? Well, by simply commanding the various groups of Colossal Titans and sending them towards the major nations' capitals and leading himself the charge towards Acirfa and Fort Salta.

This is how probably he could have acted:

Second Hypothesis

3) A mix of the two

Since both of the two hypotheses make sense but satisfy only one of the two conditions (the first one being that the major nations of the world have been destroyed and the second one being that the 80% of the world population), the number of Colossal Titans (approximately 170.000 Titans! - the number is given by the sum of the approximate perimeter of the three Walls, which is 3.396 km or around 2.110 miles, divided by the approximate width of the Colossal Titan, 20 m or 65 ft - hence 3.396.000 / 20 = 169.800) would allow Eren to enact both plans: lead various Colossal groups to specific locations of the Earth whilst the rest would simply march forward.

Third Hypothesis

And this is it. Hope you enjoy this theory and Happy 2022!

Some maps I made!

Hello everyone! Sorry for the apparent absence, but finally, I'm back! It's going to be hard being consistent with new content, since I'm on my last year of high school, but nonetheless I will try to come up with more articles and more world building.

As I stated in my first article, my objective for this blog is to give Attack on Titan the world building it deserves, and to do so, I have to give it a world first.

As we know, the only known official map is the one that showcases Marley and the island of Paradis.

From what we understood in the article "Where is the main story located?", we are able to tell that the world map of Attack on Titan is simply an oversimplified version of our world map, turned by 180°.

These are some of the continental maps I made!

This is a remake of the famous "manga map", it depicts the continent of Marley by its entirety, and part of two other continents (three, if you want to count "Europe" as another continent, which in this case could be called "Maro"): Telsis (on your left) and Kyasei (on your right).

How did I come up with the inspiration for these names?

Whilst Telsis is a direct reference to another anime, similar in technology to AoT, Violet Evergarden (in which, fun fact, the protagonist of the story shares voice actors with Mikasa Ackermann), the names Maro and Kyasei are instead made up.

Maro is the equivalent of Europe in our world, divided by Marley by the Reniati sea (anagram of the japanese pronunciation of "Tyrrhenian"), the name comes from the latin version of the city of Rome (Roma), but with the syllabes reversed (therefore, Maro)

Kyasei, the equivalent of Asia, is the Japanese translation of the word "Catai" (or "Cathay" in English), a term used by Marco Polo in his book "Il Milione" to refer to nothern China.

Hope you like them!

Analysis on Hizuru, Japan's doppelgänger

Hello everyone, Alesmat here; today I want to talk about the nation of Hizuru.

In both the anime and manga, Hizuru is the third proper nation mentioned in the story (the other two being Eldia and Marley)

Hizuru is first mentioned in Season 4, Episode 63 “From hand to hand” (Chapter 98 "Good for you" for the manga readers), by Gabi Braun when her companion, Warrior candidate Udo Bock, spilled wine on the ambassador’s traditional clothing.

The aforementioned ambassador is Kiyomi Azumabito, one of the most powerful women in the nation.

Now let’s get onto the names!

° Hizuru:
Hizuru is the name of this Eastern Nation, and it’s phonetically similar to “日出ずる国” (Hi-izuru kuni), meaning “Land of the Rising Sun”, a poetic name for Japan.

° Azumabito:
An old Japanese noble family title of the Nara Period (AD 710 – AD 794), meaning literally “Eastern man” or “East man”.

Hizuru, though, will be properly presented by Yelena in the flashbacks of Episodes 68 and 69 (Season 4).

The Anti-Marleyan volunteer explains that Hizuru has been an historical ally to Eldia, and it’s the only nation in the world known to respect Eldians as people, treating them decently (this can be seen in Kiyomi’s self-blame when Udo spilled wine on her and her faith in the Association to protect the Subjects of Ymir, mentioned in Volume 31, Chapter 123 “Island Devils”).

Mistakenly, Yelena also mentions that Hizuru met for the first time Eldia 100 years prior to the construction of the port, mistakenly implying that the two became allies in the year 752, when in reality, the Great Titan War of 743 was already lost and Paradis isolated itself from the world.

Hizuru's history begins 2000 years ago. With the first prehistoric centre located on the main island Tōyama (富山) of the Gōshoto Archipelago (五諸島), the first Hizurian clans discovered the domestication of rice and a breed of boars typical to the region: the Inoshishi.

Hizurian history shares a lot of traits with Japan's history.
That's why Hizuru, during the collapse of the Steel Age (around the year 145), was divided in dozens of warring states, and eventually, the most powerful one, the Azuma clan, gained control over the
Gōshoto Archipelago.

After the unification of the archipelago conducted by the Azuma clan in 235, Hizuru will live a long period of instability, called the "Century of the Thirty Kings", an era characterised by the power struggle of various Hizurian noble families that ended in the year 369, with the instauration of the Shogunate of Hizuru, a coup d'état conducted by the Kaidō general Kenji Azumabito.

His dinasty, a family of warriors and merchants, distinguished from the others by a symbol passed from generation to generation, a circle with inside a triangle made up of Katanas, traditional Hizurian swords.

Hizuru's massive imperial expansion began in 632, when an Eldian expedition for the exploration of the continent of Kyasei, led by admiral Blaz Hoffman, met the Imperialist Shogun Akihiko Azumabito, and with the power of persuasion, they managed to create an alliance between the two peoples.

From there on, the alliance with the Eldian Empire is going to be both the heightening and the downfall of Hizuru.

Eldia needed a powerfull ally in the East, and to pursue that objective it helped the Hizurian expansion into contiental Kyasei, forcing their culture to the locals and becoming an influential country in the East.

During the Great War of 743, Hizuru sided with Eldia against the Marleyans and the rebellions, but the war is swiftly lost. Whilst Eldia would completely collapse to Marley, Hizuru will also be subject to the extreme territorial losses on the contitent and the extremely shameful peace terms imposed by the Marleyans - among the being the abolition of the shogunate in favour of a democratic government.

Hizuru as of the year 854 - WIP!

Where is the main story located?

Up until the basement reveal, people have been wondering where the walls would be located, and finally, in 2016, with the release of chapter 86, titled "That day" (or for the pickiest, chapter 85 "The basement"), we got the reveal we've been waiting for five years:

When I read this, I asked myself: "Then where are we?" - And my question was promptly answered.

Our main characters, Eren, Mikasa, Armin and the others come from the Hermit Kingdom of Eldia, situated on Paradis Island.

Which, put to perspective with Marley (the people who sent pure titans towards the Walls for 100 years, the ones who transformed Ymir and Dina Fritz into titans, who killed Faye Jaeger, who sent Reiner and the other Warriors to destroy the walls), looks awfully familiar ...

Well, it's because it is familiar!

Like a lot of things in Attack on Titan, the world map is also reversed by 180 degrees; in fact, if we turn the Manga map like this:

We get our world map! (or at least a more stylised and less detailed version of it)

From the info given by the characters we simply understand that the continent of Marley is actually Africa, and that Paradis Island is actually the Island of Madagascar!

To make everything a bit clearer, I remade the map, so that it will be easier for us to understand what we're doing.

Hope you like it!

Welcome to my blog!

Hello everyone! My name is Alesmat, and I am an Attack on Titan enthusiast! Other things I'm interested in are: history, geography and anthropology, and when reading the Attack on Titan manga, I was a bit disappointed on how the World, which is the entire plot of the series, isn't as fleshed out as I imagined.

My goal for this blog is to analyse every single detail on the Attack on Titan Universe, and give it the World-Lore it deserves!

Hence, the existence of this blog. Creating a "realistic" world, on which our beloved characters live, with history, culture and more!

Of course, some advice:

If you want to read my articles and understand them completely, I have to warn you that there's going to be both Anime and Manga spoilers! You've been warned!

Nonetheless, follow me through this adventure, and hopefully, enjoy my work!

Thank you for reading,
